A total of 724 students graduated from the Namibia University of Science and Technology (Nust) on Friday.
According to a statement released by Nust on Monday, the graduating cohort includes 342 women and 382 men.
This represents 52.7% more male graduates than females.
Among this year’s graduating class is Abel Mubita, a security guard at Nust’s main campus.
According to Nust, Mubita’s story highlights the transformative power of education.
Mubita obtained a degree in criminal justice in policing.
“I always believed that my dream of obtaining a degree was possible, no matter how challenging the journey. One’s past does not determine their future,” he says.
Mubita told The Namibian his academic journey included many challenges, but despite them all he is proud of his accomplishment.
Hailing from Kalimbeza village in the Zambezi region, Mubita came to Windhoek in 2015, with the hope of getting a job after he was unable to gain admittance to a tertiary institution.
“My intention was to get a job in a shop or as a security guard,” he says.
Luckily for Mubita, he was employed as a security guard stationed at Nust.
Speaking at the ceremony, Nust vice chancellor Erold Naomab said the highest number of graduates were recorded in the Faculty of Commerce, Human Sciences and Education, at 387.
Naomab also highlighted a 35% increase in masters graduates compared to last year.
“Notably, today we are graduating 78 masters and three Doctors of Philosophy.”
Additionally, the graduates included 32 international students, he added.
Nust council chairperson Leake Hangala said each graduation ceremony is not only a milestone in the lives of the graduates, the parents and guardians that selflessly supported them, and the faculty who taught them, but also in the life of the institution.
“To the graduates, after today you will face two important questions: What are you going to do and what are you going to be?” he said.
The graduation ceremony consisted of:
387 graduates from the Faculty of Commerce, Human Sciences and Education
132 graduates from the Faculty of Computing and Informatics
141 graduates from the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment
64 graduates from the Faculty of Health, Natural Resources and Applied Sciences
