National Assembly speaker Peter Katjavivi has arrived in Cuba on a week-long visit to strengthen Cuban-Namibian ties.

According to Katjavivi, the visit will strengthen the solidarity between the two countries and open avenues to increase cooperation in education and health.

“Cuba has been a vital ally to Namibia during our liberation struggle and in developing crucial sectors like education and healthcare,” the speaker says.

During the week long visit, from 20 to 26 October, Katjavivi will be joined by a multi-party parliamentary delegation.

Spokesperson Sacky Kadhikwa says the visit was an invitation from Juan Hernández, president of the national assembly of the People’s Power of Cuba.

“This visit reflects the strong ties between the two nations, especially in areas of mutual interest such as education and social development.”

He says Katjavivi is also scheduled to visit the University of Havana and meet with Namibian students currently studying in Cuba.

Katjavivi is accompanied by Gotthard Kasuto, Jennifer Van den Heever, and Joseph Kauandenge.
