President Nangolo Mbumba says Ghana’s minister of foreign affairs, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, who has been appointed as the seventh secretary general of the Commonwealth of Nations, will steer the work of the Commonwealth brilliantly.
Botchwey was appointed during the 2024 Commonwealth heads of state and government summit, which concluded in Samoa on Saturday.
“I am confident that Ayorkor Botchwey will steer the work of the Commonwealth brilliantly and will take our organisation to greater heights,” Mbumba said in a statement on Saturday.
Mbumba also thanked the current secretary general of the Commonwealth, Patricia Scotland, for the leadership she provided to the organisation during her tenure and wished her success in her future endeavours.
Baroness Scotland has served as secretary general of the Commonwealth since 2016.
Commonwealth member states have chosen Ayorkor Botchwey to succeed her on 1 April 2025.
