Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) president McHenry Venaani has lashed out at the Swapo-led government, saying the ruling party has for long taken advantage of people’s hardships.

Speaking during a PDM election campaign meeting at Eenhana in the Ohangwena region on Saturday, Venaani said a lack of access to water in the region is unacceptable.

“So many people are denied access to water, which is one of life’s basic necessities. It is unacceptable that in an independent Namibia, which is rich with natural resources, people don’t have access to water. Residents of Ohangwena region must often walk long distances just to access water – a situation unfit for any community in this country,” Venaani said.

He further accused the Swapo-led government of using drought relief food as an election campaign tool.

“During elections, Swapo campaigns use drought relief food hoping to secure people’s votes by dangling necessities that should be a basic right for every citizen. This is wrong, let me be clear, drought relief food is not Swapo’s to give, it belongs to all Namibians and it should never be used as a tool for political manipulation,” Venaani said.

He said under the PDM, the Ohangwena region should expect his party to prioritise agriculture, aquifers and other sustainable water projects that will ensure the region never again has to endure hardship caused by water scarcity.
