Ugandan journalist Blanshe Musinguzi was crowned African Investigative Journalist of the Year in Johannesburg, South Africa, on Thursday.
With a total of 158 entries from investigative journalists across Africa, Musinguzi won with his story ‘How Congo Trees are Smuggled through East Africa’.
The environmental investigation featured on-the-ground research, revealing how laws in Uganda are ignored or abused.
The story followed the processing and export of illicit timber from different countries, uncovering the people and companies behind it.
The second runners-up were journalists from Ghana’s Fourth Estate team for the story ‘The 3 Billion Lie’ by Manasseh Azure Awuni, Adwoa Adobia-Owusu and Evans Aziamor-Mensah.
This team effort by Ghanaian journalists uncovers how parasitic companies are created to siphon taxpayers’ money in the oil sector.
