Weddings are booming in Namibia! Every weekend, there are more than 20 ceremonies, adding up to 1 040 weddings a year (my own analysis).
This means 1 040 grooms are stepping up in their wedding suits. Some nail the look, others do just okay, and a few miss the mark entirely.
I have never been married, but I can imagine the excitement running through a groom’s mind. It’s easy to get caught up in planning the food and drinks, while neglecting the outfit.
My advice: prioritise your attire first and get it out of the way.
Let me share some insights:
Colour is crucial when selecting a wedding suit, and while there is room for personal taste, certain colours always make a lasting impression.
A full black or a black and white combination is timeless and sophisticated, perfect for the formality and elegance of a wedding day.
Lighter shades, like grey, navy or brown, are excellent for everyday occasions, but don’t quite bring the unique vibe you would want on your wedding day. After all, this is your big moment, why not wear something special and out of the ordinary?
An all-black suit with a bow tie is the best choice for any groom. It’s a classic, sleek look that is elegant without being overly flashy. And remember, a bow tie adds that extra sense of occasion. Avoid the standard work tie – it’s your wedding day, so elevate the look to match the formality of the event.
As tempting as an all-white suit might sound, it can be tricky to pull off. White doesn’t always look sharp and can sometimes distract rather than complement the overall aesthetic. Instead, consider pairing a white jacket with black pants, which adds a crisp touch.
Personally, I am not a fan of white jackets or blazers with black lapels; if you are going for a white blazer, go all-white without any black lapels. A boutonnière on the lapel adds a classic touch without compromising the look.
Find a skilled tailor, choose the best brand or fabric within your reach, and tick that off your list early. If buying is not an option, consider renting – you will still look sharp without breaking the bank.
Lace-up shoes are ideal, leave the loafers and sneakers, but ultimately it’s all about personal preference. It’s your wedding day, after all, and you should feel comfortable.
The small details make all the difference.
And if you can splurge, consider having a custom-made suit or something made to measure. It always feels special to have something tailored precisely to your body. A bespoke suit will feel uniquely yours, one of a kind, crafted just for this day.
In my view, a full black tuxedo is your best choice, paired with dress shoes and black silk socks.
It’s a look that never fails. While there’s a trend toward unique touches like sneakers, save those for day two, where the rules can be relaxed and you can express yourself freely. But for the main event, embrace the timeless elegance of a black tuxedo.
Skip the chinos and coloured pants, stick with the simplicity of black, and you will exude both class and confidence.
