Opposition leader and president of the Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) McHenry Venaani says the incoming United States (US) president should take Africa seriously.
Venaani spoke to Desert Radio on Wednesday morning before it became clear that Donald Trump would emerge victorious in the US presidential elections.
“If you ask me a question, which administration between the two would I prefer? I think neither of them. Either one can come, as long as they have something for Africa,” he said.
Venaani said he expected Republican candidate Donald Trump to win the election.
“There is racialism in America, where you have the majority of Americans who are white, rural folks. And they are coming out in numbers for Trump,” he said.
Trump appeared more convincing to voters in terms of the economy, Venaani believes.
He attributed Kamala Harris’ weaker performance to the fact that she and the Biden administration did not convincingly pressure Israel to moderate its conduct in Gaza, nor did they appear to seriously try to prevent a regional conflict involving Iran.
“I think Trump would also rain on that war (in Ukraine) to see an end to it,” he said.
Venaani criticised Biden for not taking Africa seriously enough.
“He has not visited Africa in the past four years. And that’s a big ‘no’ for an American president . . .”
Venaani would like to see the US-Africa Growth and Opportunity Act (Agoa) implemented so that more Namibian goods can enter the US market, he said.
The PDM has a close relationship with the Republican Party, but not with Trump as an individual, he said.
