The long-awaited upgrade of Independence Stadium in Windhoek is finally in the pipeline after Marley Tjitjo Architects was selected as lead consultant for the project.
In a press statement on Wednesday, Ministry of Sport, Youth and National Service executive director Erastus Haitengela announced the selection of Marley Tjitjo Architects in terms of the Public Procurement Act.
The firm of architects was chosen as lead consultant for a feasibility study, design, tender documentation, contract administration and site supervision for the alteration and upgrade of Independence Stadium to conform to Confederation of African Football (CAF) regulations, Haitengela stated.
The firm is to be paid about N$802 000 for its work on the project, according to a procurement notice signed by Haitengela.
The confederation decommissioned Independence Stadium in 2021 because it was considered unfit for hosting international football matches.
With no other stadium in Namibia meeting CAF’s requirements, the Namibian football teams play their home matches in South Africa.
