The Ministry of Works and Transport, through the Road Fund Administration (RFA), has provided N$29.4 million for the construction of a district road in the Kavango East region.
Deputy prime minister and works and transport minister John Mutorwa announced this during the official groundbreaking ceremony to commence the first phase of construction on Thursday.
District road 3472 from Ndiyona to Djaradjara covers 53km and connects the Khaudum National Park to trunk road 0804 (Rundu-Divundu) up to Tsumkwe.
“Our government, via the RFA, has fully funded this project. It will be implemented over 12 months,” he said.
The initiative aims to improve connectivity, enhance road safety, improve access to essential services and create economic opportunities, noted Mutorwa.
He said the strategic intervention underscores the government’s commitment to improving quality of life in rural areas and links numerous schools and clinics in the region.
“The project will provide approximately 80 jobs to Namibians living in the area,” Mutorwa said.
It will also facilitate the transfer of skills to the local population, he added.
Mutorwa urged the RFA to ensure the project is completed on time and according to plan and budget.
Shikoro resident Daniel Haisiku said the road is an important development in both the constituency and region. He said it will improve business in remote areas, as well as provide access to various services.
According to Haisiku, the government has heard the cry of the people in remote areas as the development will make life easier for those living inland.
