Despite progress made in the development of the Namibian Police thus far, the country is still experiencing crime, police inspector general Joseph Shikongo says.

He was speaking during a police parade on Monday.

Theft topped the crimes commited from November last year to September this year, with 17 374 cases reported, statistics show.

Shikongo said assault with grievous bodily harm followed suit with 10 328 cases, while common assault cases stood at 10 137.

He said housebreaking of residential homes stood at 8 637 during this period, robbery cases at 6 283, and cases of cellphone theft at 6 138.

“Despite progress made in the development of the police thus far, the country is still experiencing a prevalence of crimes,” Shikongo said.

He said the challenges the police faced have been numerous and diverse, yet force has remained steadfast.

“From countering crime and ensuring the rule of law to providing assistance during natural disasters, our officers have been the guardians of peace and protectors of our citizens,” Shikongo said.

He said it is imperative to recognise the collective efforts of every officer.

“Behind every uniform is a human being, a person who has chosen to serve and protect the nation by all means.

“We owe them not only our gratitude, but also our unwavering support as they continue to navigate the complexities of their duties,” Shikongo said.
