NEFF questions ECN’s election readiness as vehicle shortfall remains unresolved 24 hours before polls

The Namibia Economic Freedom Fighters (NEFF) has expressed a lack of confidence in the Electoral Commission of Namibia’s abillity to manage a successful election 24 hours before the polls open.

In a press statement on Tuesday, NEFF deputy leader Kalimbo Iipumbu said the commission has not disclosed whether it has managed to procure all the vehicles needed for Wednesday.

The commission earlier said it still needed 2 195 vehicles, in addition to the 1 727 required for the elections.

“As of now, the ECN has admitted to a shortfall of 1 727 vehicles out of the 3 922 required for the elections, citing delays caused by government inefficiencies. With barely a few hours before the elections, there is still no clarity on whether the necessary vehicles have been secured.

“This shocking oversight demonstrates that the ECN has failed to adequately plan for a process it knew would occur well in advance,” he said.

The Namibian earlier reported that the ECN obtained 260 vehicles for the Zambezi region, as well as two helicopters ahead of elections.

Regional electoral officer Lesley Simwanza confirmed this on Monday.

He said a regional fleet of 271 was hired.
