ECN faces backlash over voter’s card discrepancies

Party representatives at the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) headquarters have expressed a lack of confidence in the commission following the continued issuance of new voter’s cards instead of duplicates on Tuesday.

A scuffle broke out between party representatives and the commission following a tip-off that the commission was issuing original cards at their offices.

This subjected the commission’s officers to scrutiny from party representatives, who later discovered that one of the cards that was supposed to be issued as a duplicate was intact and original, and had a different voter registration number (VRN) from the initial card issued.

In an interview with The Namibian, Landless People’s Movement (LPM) representative to the ECN political liaison committee Ivan Skrywer said that the commission “has opened up a special voting process for Swapo”.

At the time of the interview, party representatives were waiting to have a meeting with the chief electoral commissioner and the commission’s chief of operations.

“I can assure you that the meeting is going to be heated; we will be frank and straightforward,” Skrywer said.

Rally for Democracy and Progress’ PLC representative Nicanor Ndjoze said they saw two cards for the same person with different VRNs.

United Democratic Front secretary general Daniel Tsaneb has expressed disappointment with the ECN for issuing original voters cards instead of duplicates as agreed.

Tsaneb on Tuesday said they discovered the commission went against what was decided in their political liaison committee meetings.
