Namibia participating in ICJ climate change advisory

Namibia aims to emphasise the legal responsibilities and state accountability for greenhouse gas emissions, especially given the country’s experiences with droughts, floods and wildfires.

This is according to Ministry of Justice acting spokesperson Edmund Khoaseb and follows the Cabinet’s approval of Namibia’s participation in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) advisory opinion on climate change obligations.

Khoaseb says the Cabinet’s approval is in line with a United Nations (UN) General Assembly resolution on states’ obligations under international law regarding climate change.

“Under Article 95 of the Namibian Constitution, the country is committed to promoting the welfare of its people through sustainable policies,” Khoaseb highlights.

The country submitted its written statement in March and written comments in August, he adds.

“The final step involves oral hearings from 2-13 December in The Hague, with Namibia presenting on Monday. The proceedings can be watched live on UN Web TV,” Khoaseb says.

Namibia remains dedicated to participating in ICJ proceedings and building expertise among its representatives, he adds.
