Civics has officially changed its name to Bucks Buccaneers, the Namibia Football Association (NFA) announce on Thursday.
The change in name and ownership is effective immediately, the NFA said in a statement.
“This follows the successful completion of an ownership transition and subsequent approval by the NFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF),” the NFA confirmed.
“Civics Football Club recently entered into negotiations regarding new ownership. Following the NFA’s review and approval of the ownership change, in accordance with NFA Statutes, the new owners submitted an application for a name change.
“The NFA, after consultation with CAF, has received positive confirmation regarding this request,” the NFA stated.
Civics were founded by a group of young students in 1983, who initially named the team after a local street – Bethlehem Boys.
The club later became the Mighty Civilians before being recast again as Civics.
They won three consecutive league titles during their golden era between 2005 and 2007, a period when they were regulars in continental club competitions.
Civics also won the NFA Cup three times – in 2003, 2008 and 2021.
“The NFA congratulates the new owners of Bucks Buccaneers and welcome them to the Namibia Premier League. The association also wishes its officials, players, and supporters all the best in this new chapter,” the NFA said.
“The NFA recognises and appreciates the history and legacy of Civics Football Club within Namibian football. We look forward to the continued success and development of the club under its new identity as Bucks Buccaneers.”
