Youth storm National Youth Council, protesting Tjongarero’s interim board

A group of young people stormed the National Youth Council (NYC) office in Windhoek on Friday in protest against minister of sport, youth and national service Agnes Tjongarero’s appointment of an interim board.

Tjongarero refused to recognise a Simon Taapoi board, which was elected by the youth last year, saying this was against a decision to set aside the election process until a number of grievances were resolved.

A faction of the youth strongly opposed to the minister’s decision have filed a court case, calling her decision to appoint this board illegal.

“We are locking down this office until 28 January when a court decision will be made. The judge said nothing must be done until then, but the minister proceeded to illegally appoint an interim board. She has no power to do so,” PDM youth leader Vakamuina Kamutuezu said on Friday.

The protesters banged on the door to the office of interim chairperson Beverly Silas, demanding that she vacate it.
