Bathu Sneakers opens store in Namibia

Theo Baloyi

South African Bathu Sneakers launched their first store in Namibia on Thursday.

What started off in the boot of a car in 2015, has grown to over 30 stores around South Africa, and now, the first store outside of South Africa.

Founder Theo Baloyi says it is not only about opening another branch but also a step forward towards the brand’s mission of making an impact in Africa. At the launch, Baloyi said: “Bathu is not mine, it is ours”.

“Every pair of shoes we craft is rooted in purpose. We’re dedicated to building a brand that Africans can proudly call their own, creating sustainable jobs and making a meaningful impact in the communities we serve.”

One of Bathu’s greatest desires is to partner with future African leaders and to be intentional about connecting with the future consumer.

During the launch, Baloyi spoke about the importance of expanding into Namibia, regardless of the country’s small population.

He recognised Namibia’s support for the brand, saying it only made sense to return and thank the people for their loyalty.

“We structured this launch to show our appreciation because the greatest support in the southern African region comes from Namibia,” he said.

Bathu Sneakers started an initiative called ‘Bathu for Bathu Care’ that aims to donate one million school shoes in the next 10 years.

On Friday, Bathu Sneakers donated 100 pairs of shoes to two schools, and on Saturday they did an in-store activation plus a shoe trade, where new sneakers were traded with older pairs.

The weekend activities and the launch on Thursday was well-attended by people from different industries. Influencers and customers who wore Bathu sneakers during the event shared positive feedback, saying the shoes were extremely comfortable and long-lasting.

One of the customers at the launch said: “The opening of this store is more than just a business expansion for Bathu, it’s a meaningful step in building a brand that is focused on making a difference in Africa. I believe, the company’s mission goes beyond selling shoes, it’s about creating jobs, helping communities and connecting with the next generation of African leaders and consumers.”

With the opening of the store in Namibia, Bathu is continuing to walk its journey of growth, impact and purpose across the African continent.

The new store is in Maerua Mall in Windhoek.
