Mbumba says country should unite behind new president

Former president Nangolo Mbumba is calling on Namibia to embrace the country’s new chapter with hope, promise and prosperity under president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah.

Mbumba was speaking at Nandi-Ndaitwah’s inauguration and the country’s 35th Independence Day celebration at State House on Friday.

“Now, as we turn the last page of this final chapter, we look forward to the beginning of a new chapter, a chapter of hope, promise and prosperity,” he said.

Mbumba has urged Namibians to rally behind Nandi-Ndaitwah and support her tenure.

“The chapter of her excellency Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah. Let us all support her and wish her good health, strength and wisdom,” he said.

‘EVENTFUL’ TENURE

In his speech, Mbumba acknowledged the support he had received during his tenure and stressed the importance of unity as the nation moves forward.

“Wherever I travelled across the country I was greeted with cheers, smiles and gestures of goodwill. I am humbled and proud at the same time to have been your president,” he said.

His call to support the incoming president was a key part of his farewell message, highlighting a focus on a smooth transition and continued progress for Namibia.

Speaking about his tenure, Mbumba said describing it as “eventful” is an understatement.

He took over the reigns after former president Hage Geingob died in 2024.

“From my first day in office, to this very moment, it feels like I never had a chance to catch my breath,” he said.

‘MY ROCK’

Mbumba further thanked his wife, Sustjie, for her support.

“My rock, my number one supporter, my soulmate.

Thank you for being with me every step of the way – even when I was overcome by the weight of the situation and I felt these legs could not take me any further,” the former president said.

Mbumba was also grateful for the security cluster.

“Thank you to all the uniformed services, the men and women whose daily task it is to keep our country and people safe and secure both from external and internal threats,” he said.
