Katima Mulilo Police Station commander chief inspector Charles Mayumbelo is calling on residents to desist from buying stolen items, especially from individuals believed to be well-known criminals at the town and region.
Mayumbelo on Wednesday shared insights on a recent case in the Cowboy township, where the police apprehended three suspects with moveable property believed to have been stolen.
“When you buy from them you encourage them to go and steal again, hence we will not be fighting a winning battle. But when you report all suspected cases, then we will reduce these cases,” he stated.
He said the suspects, a 18-year-old Zambian national and two Namibian nationals aged 22 and 17, were arrested last week. The 17-year-old has since been placed under the care of his parents, as he is classified as a minor under Namibian law.
“The three suspects are believed to be involved in a well-organised syndicate. I cannot reveal their names now for fear that it might jeopardise the ongoing investigation, especially as the other two, who are also suspected to be involved in the syndicate, are well known and still at large in the community.
“The three appeared before court, but they were all denied bail, except for that special case of the 17-year-old,” he said.
Mayumbelo added that one of the arrested suspects already has a similar pending case before the courts.
