Forty years ago on 22 January 1975, Academia Secondary School opened for the first time with 19 staff members and 227 pupils in Standard 5 to 7 (now Grade 7 to 9), led by the Principal PJ Scholtz.
Fast forward to today, Academia boasts over 910 pupils and 37 staff members and is now a fully integrated school that accommodates pupils of all races, despite its predominately white culture in the past.
“This school has a proud tradition and a proud history,” Howard Dumeni, the chairman of the school board, said during a short ceremony in the absence of Herman Rust, the current principal. Dumeni encouraged pupils to do their best in the exams this year. “There’s nothing stopping you from reaching the highest goal. As they say, you do your best and God will do the rest.”
The school celebrated its 40th birthday on 22 January with each class engaging in a cake-baking competition embodying a message dedicated to the huge milestone. Grade 9B won first place, Grade 11E came in second and Grade 8F were third.
The school hopes to maintain a standard of discipline and provide quality education to its pupils for many more years to come.
