Accident victims identified

THE four people who died instantly when their Isuzu pickup collided head-on with an oncoming truck on the Okahandja-Otjiwarongo road on Tuesday, have been identified.

Otjozondjupa regional police crime investigations co-ordinator, detective chief inspector Naukalemo Andreas said the three women and one man have been identified by relatives. They are Hilia Nailonga Mwatukange (51); Nicanor Haipinge, whose age is unknown and who is Mwatukange’s husband; Anna Paulina Mofuka (45); and the 36-year-old Miriam Naita Heita.

Andreas said all four deceased were coming from Windhoek and headed to Onawa village in the Omusati region. The accident occurred on Tuesday shortly after 5h00 some 32 kilometres north of Okahandja on the Okahandja-Otjiwarongo road.

“The accident happened on a straight road and we still don’t know what caused it,” said Andreas, adding that all four occupants in the Isuzu, including Mofuka, who was driving the vehicle, died on the spot.

The Isuzu was found stuck underneath the white truck that was transporting vegetables from Farm Soetwater in the Grootfontein district to Windhoek. The driver of the truck and passenger sustained serious injuries and were taken to the Katutura Intermediate Hospital in the capital.

Andreas said a case of culpable homicide has been opened at the Okahandja Police Station.
