African Stars go 10 points clear

African Stars came from behind to beat Orlando Pirates 3-1 on Sunday and open up a 10-point gap at the top of the MTC Namibia Premier League.

Nicky Musambani put Pirates ahead on 31 minutes, but Stars rallied back with three second half goals by Pat Uanivi, Bradley Wermann and Treasure Kauapirura to win the match in style.

The victory sees Stars way ahead of the chasing pack on the log, with 41 points from 17 matches, while Black Africa are second on 31 points from 17 matches.

In a largely uninspiring first half Pirates had the better chances with striker Nicky Musambani coming close to scoring on a few occasions.

He finally got the opening goal on 31 minutes when Marcello Haraseb broke down the wing and crossed to Musambani to volley home from close range.

Stars however came back strongly after the break and Pat Uanivi finally opened their account when he slammed home a loose ball in Pirates’ box midway through the second half.

They took the lead with 10 minutes to go when Pirates keeper Charles Uirab could only parry away a shot by Riaan Cloete and Bradley Wermann followed up to put the loose ball into the net.

Stars winger Treasure Kauapirura secured their victory with a great freekick a minute from time that hit the roof of the net.

In other matches on Sunday, Tigers were held to a 1-1 draw by United Stars, Rebels beat Julinho Sporting 2-0 and Tura Magic and Mighty Gunners played to a 2-all draw.

United Stars’ draw capped a fine weekend, during which they also beat Rebels 1-0 and saw them moving up five places to sixth on the log on 26 points.

Tigers, meanwhile remain third on 29 points – 12 points behind African Stars.

Rebels’ victory gave them some breathing space at the foot of the table as they are now third from bottom on 13 points, with Touch & Go (10) and Benfica (7) rooted to the bottom of the log.
