Ali takes on Alwyn

Ali takes on Alwyn

NAMIBIA’S Ali Nuumbembe will get another chance to land the elusive World Boxing Association (WBA)Africa welterweight title when he takes on South Africa’s Alwyn Mahonisi this Friday in Windhoek.

The Namibian missed out to capture the vacant title after his former opponent. Zimbabwe’s Livingstone Kachingwada was declared unfit moments before their fight in Windhoek on March 21.
Nuumbembe’s trainer and boxing promoter, Nestor Tobias told The Namibian Sport yesterday that the Commonwealth champion will now be given a another opportunity to fight for the title.
”He has been working very hard. I am happy with his progress and on Friday he will be the man to watch when he goes for another big title in his career. He has remained patient enough and I believe that he will achieve the feat with ease,” said Tobias.
Nuumbembe is undefeated in 22 fights from 26, with only four losses and one draw, while his opponent has a record of 21 fights, 17 wins and four losses.
Tobias said he respects the record of the opponent, but believes that will be not relevant.
Tobias said there will also be several undercards ahead of the main bout, with crowd favourites, Vikapita Meroro and Wilbeforce Shihepo also expected to trade blows.
He said Namibia’s Daniel ‘Open Fire’ Kashela and Sacky ‘Izi-Nyooka’ Shikukutu will also take to the ring for a ”Catchweight division” fight, while
Peter Malakia and Martin Haikali will square-up for the national lightweight title, according to Tobias.
* Meanwhile, Jason ‘Taks’ Naule and Abnerk Shidjuu fought in South Africa at the weekend.
Shidjuu won his fight on points in the mini-flyweight division, while Naule lost through second round TKO
