All Roads Lead To… Rand Street Butchery

Many people know of cheap places to eat – but it truly means something when everyone goes there… and it’;s always full.

That kind of place is Rand Street Butchery in Khomasdal or, as everyone likes to call it – Friedel’;s. Because that’;s the magic of the mini market there: All you have to say is that you’;re getting your food at Friedel’;s and whoever knows the spot will join you for the ride.

Serving food such as roosterbrood, pork and lamb braai-vleis and wors, and cooking it to the T, the feel of the butchery is that of a community coming together to eat good food. Mind you, the prices are cheaper than you may think. For less than N$100, you can feed three people and everyone will be rubbing their bellies in satisfaction.

Being a sucker for anything to do with food, I secure all three options, and although I would have loved my wors juicier, I understand the rush to serve everyone. Plus the delicious meat makes up for everything.

For first-timers, the process is simple. Ignore the roosterbrood for a bit and don’;t mind the smoke blowing into your hair. It’;s part of the butchery’;s experience. But keep an eye on the one you want – and make sure you have a backup in case someone snatches your favourite. It’;s all about first come, first serve!

Once you’;re ready and waiting in the queue, pick your meat and pay – the process doesn’;t take longer than five minutes, seeing as there are a number of people behind the counter. Once you’;ve gotten your meat, you’;ll be given a cardboard to secure your roosterbrood and then you are good to go.

You can either stand around and eat around the fires (because for some reason, it just tastes better at the source of it all) or you can order and leave. The butchery offers a wider variety of raw meat as well, just in case you are interested in preparing your meat for reasonable prices before December comes around.

The staff are friendly and willing to help – that’;s if you don’;t take out any cameras and photograph the products without permission, but otherwise, it’;s an awesome experience and a legend in the making.
