Preparations for the 16th Annual Lüderitz Crayfish Festival are at an advanced stage, with the exhibition of different products scheduled to take place at the Lüderitz Waterfront Harbour Square from 27 April to 1 May.
This year, the event will be held under the theme ‘The Ocean, Our Legacy’, and organisers hope to attract hundreds of people from across the country.
According to Benjamin McKay, the chairperson of the Lüderitz Crayfish Festival Trust, the festival continually strives to produce the finest quality yearly celebration possible, while adhering to its basic principles of openness, equality, fairness and inclusivity.
“This year’s festival will be celebrated and cherished in accordance with our core principles of encouraging and maintaining quality and inclusivity, while simultaneously protecting our delicate marine resources to ensure the festival’s sustainability and longevity,” McKay says.
“The main objective is to deliver the most memorable and enjoyable crayfish festival for the community of Lüderitz and beyond.”
The festival will host a beauty pageant, Miss Crayfish, this Friday at the German Hostel, as a prelude to the event, with more than 10 beauties competing for the title. Personalities and fashionistas Reinhard Mahalie and Rumano Fabrishh will attend the glitzy and glamorous event.
There will also be surprise performances by invited guest artists.
The event will feature a motorsport activity, Spin City, at the Old Golf Club on Saturday, followed by a music bash at the Lüderitz Sports Stadium. Langarm, Jazz Dance, Sigera Jazz and Fusion Band will be on the entertainment line up on Saturday, as well as the Rock Joll Dance Just Jack Band.
Popular South African musician Paige will be the headlining act at the music bash. Local artists Tate Buti, Chester Houseprince, and artists from Lüderitz are also included in the line-up.
On Sunday, there will be a gospel show at the German Hostel.
“We aim to grow the kiddie’s segment of activities to inclusively produce an amazing and memorable time for the kids,” says McKay.
“The event provides a platform for an intensive programme of engagement between the business community and corporate personalities, as well as business leaders.
“The objectives of the conference are to position Lüderitz as an industrial economic hub and to conceptualise the key drivers that impact the locals and representatives from the oil and gas, green energy, mining and fishing and tourism sectors,” says McKay.
