The Namibian Agronomic Board will hold its 2023 National Agronomic and Horticultural Awards (Naha) at the Mashare irrigation project in Kavango East on Thursday.
According to a statement issued by NAB spokesperson Fabian Auguste, the minister of agriculture, water and land reform, Calle Schlettwein, will deliver the keynote address.
NAB chief executive Fidelis Mwazi; professor Rhoda Birech of the University of Namibia; Tino Hess of Farming for Resilience (F4R), GIZ; Hubertus Hamm chairperson of NAB board; John Alugodhi of the Namibia Agriculture Insurance Scheme (Nasria) and Etuukata Nashima from the Certification Namibian Standards Institution will also address the gathering.
According to Auguste, more than 300 agronomy and horticulture producers, traders, input suppliers and other key stakeholders are expected to attend the event.
Going under the theme “Promoting a Resilient, Sustainable and Profitable Crop Industry”, Naha will recognise and award crop value chain actors, including producers, processors, traders, service providers and school gardens that have made significant contributions to the development as well as the growth of Namibia’s agronomy and horticultural industry over the last 12 months.
Awards will be presented in various categories to the best performers who have demonstrated exceptional innovative approaches, good risk diversification, good labour relations and community involvement.
“The awards will be presented across an array of diverse categories, including the Naha agronomy awards for the best maize, mahangu and wheat producers of the year,” said the statement.
The other awards are the Naha horticulture award, the Naha special award, the Naha small-scale producer award, the Naha exporter awards and the Naha master crop value chain award.
Others are the school garden award, the service
provider award and the exporter award, all of which were sponsored by Usaid, Namdia, GIZ, German Cooperation, Starke Ayre, Nasria Ltd and the Rössing Foundation.
