American citizens Marcus Thomas and Kevan Townsend were found guilty on a charge of murder in the Windhoek High Court today.
The two men, accused of murdering a 25-year-old man, Andre Heckmair, in Windhoek on 7 January 2011, were also convicted on charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances and the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
Thomas was found guilty on a count of importing firearm barrels into Namibia without a permit as well.
Judge Christie Liebenberg further convicted Thomas on a charge of attempting to defeat or obstruct the course of justice, which he committed in his prison cell when he burned pages from a notebook he managed to get from a police detective’s office after his and Townsend’s arrest.
The two men’s trial started in November 2014, and was marked by numerous delays caused by themselves.
Thomas (38) and Townsend (37) elected not to testify in their own defence after the state closed its case in their trial in May this year.
