Fillemon Amupadhi can now officiate abroad after passing the International Referee’s Candidate Course in Morocco.

Hosted by the Confederation of African Volleyball in Salé from 7 to 15 July, the prestigious International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) course featured 25 referees from 21 countries eagier to upgrade their craft.

Amupadhi is now certified to referee beyond Namibia and intends to keep improving his craft.

“The course was a great learning opportunity. It was more on how to officiate on the highest level and I’m now a level where one can officiate games outside the country,” Amupadhi told The Namibian Sport yesterday.

“This will open up more opportunities for other referees in the country.”

Namibia Volleyball Federation (NVF) president Hillary Imbuwa says Amupadhi’s achievement was “remarkable” and hailed the volleyball official’s commitment to better himself, saying it would inspire his compatriots.

“This accomplishment not only highlights his dedication and hard work but also represents a significant milestone for NVF in our strategic goal for capacity building. Amupadhi’s qualification as an FIVB international candidate is a testament to the high standards we aim to achieve within our federation,” Imbuwa said when congratulating Amupadhi.

“His success brings us one step closer to our vision of enhancing the quality and competitiveness of volleyball in Namibia. This achievement will inspire our players, coaches and officials, showcasing the opportunities available through commitment and excellence,” he said.

“His expertise and international exposure will undoubtedly elevate the standards of our training programs and competitions.”

NEW NVF LEADER

On the home front, the NVF is expected to elect a new president on 26 July when the sport body’s elective congress takes place at Katima Mulilo.

This is after incumbent Imbuwa announced he will not be running for another term. The significant event on the federation’s calendar will also see elections for the two senior NVF executive positions, namely the first and second vice president.

“As the current term comes to an end, we acknowledge the dedicated service of our incumbent president, Hillary Dux Imbuwa. Having served as acting president from 2018 to 2019 and president from 2020 to 2024, Imbuwa has decided not to seek re-election,” the NVF said in a statement.

“His leadership has been instrumental in the growth and development of volleyball in Namibia. The names of the eligible delegates will be made public next week, stated the NVF, which promised a transparent elective process.

The meeting will take place on the sidelines of the MTC Volleyball Premiership action at the north-eastern town.
