Amushelelo burns tyres at labour ministry office ‘to protest workers’ rights’

Social activist Michael Amushelelo burned tyres in a street in front of the ministry of labour’s head office in Windhoek in a solo protest about the rights of workers on Friday.

“This burning of tyres in front of the ministry of labour symbolises the urgent intervention that should be taken to ensure that no other worker dies due to safety and health regulations being ignored,” Amushelo said on Facebook.

He staged his one-man protest after the Ministry of Labour, Industrial Relations and Employment Creation ordered the company Zhongmei Engineering Group to halt operations following an accident that claimed the life of an employee of the company on Wednesday.

Amushelelo alleges that the labour ministry has failed to ensure that Zhongmei Engineering Group adheres to safety regulations and standards.

He also alleges the ministry has failed to strengthen safety regulations in work places, after three employees of Chinese-owned companies allegedly died due to poor safety practices at work.

“Thanks to the negligence of the ministry of labour who have sold out our workers, children live with the fear that their parents will not come back home safely,” Amushelelo said.
