Amushelelo to sue over ‘wrongful imprisonment’

Michael Amushelelo

Activist Michael Amushelelo has revealed that he is preparing to take legal action against home affairs, immigration, safety and security minister Albert Kawana, and police inspector general Joseph Shikongo.

This decision follows his acquittal on the three charges on which he and Dimbulukeni Nauyoma were prosecuted for.

Amushelelo, speaking to The Namibian on Monday, said he has given instructions to his lawyer, Kadhila Amoomo of Kadhila Amoomo Legal Practitioners, to initiate civil proceedings against the state.

“Initially, I wanted to sue the state for N$100 million, however, knowing very well that the cost will be borne by taxpayers, I have settled for a more modest amount,” he said.

Amushelelo declined to reveal the specific amount he is suing for, emphasising that the primary reason for the lawsuit is to create a reference point for anyone wrongfully arrested and prosecuted.

“Taxpayers should condemn this abuse of power by the state, as they will ultimately bear the financial burden,” he said.

Amushelelo further indicated that additional details would be shared during an upcoming media briefing.
Namibia Economic Freedom Fighters (NEFF) deputy leader Kalimbo Iipumbu said NEFF commends the officers who bravely testified and told the truth while condemning those who provided contradictory statements to justify Amushelelo’s incarceration.

“Namibia has no place for such malcontents who are driven by a thirst for oppression and injustice instead of upholding the legacy of our hard-won liberties,”Iipumbu said.
