Angolan arrested after girlfriend dies in panga attack at Hochfeld

An Angolan national (24) was arrested on Sunday at a commercial farm in the Hochfeld area after he allegedly attacked and killed his girlfriend with a panga.

Senior inspector Maureen Mbeha, the police’s head of community affairs in the Otjozondjupa region, says the deceased was on Monday identified by close relatives as Laina Iiyambo (31).

Iiyambo is a Namibian national who worked at the farm along with the suspect, Mbeha says.

“The alleged attack took place on Sunday night at about 20h30 on Olundago commercial farm in the Hochfeld area of the Okahandja district,” she says.

Preliminary police investigations indicate that Iiyambo’s boyfriend hit her on the arms, neck and head.

She died at the scene shortly after the attack, and detectives working on the case are still trying to establish the motive for the incident, Mbeha says.

The suspect is expected to make his first court appearance in the Okahandja Magistrate’s Court this week on a charge of murder.

Police investigations continue.
