Presidential election contender Ally Angula says she still harbours a lot of respect for Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah and Panduleni Itula, despite the two being her competitors in the race for the highest office in the country, come the polls in 2024.
Angula is running for the presidency against numerous candidates, among them Itula, who is the president of the Independent Patriots for Change and Swapo’s vice president Nandi-Ndaitwah.
Speaking to Desert Radio on Thursday, Angula said she is aware of critics on social media platforms suggesting that she is less critical of the current regime and the goings on in parliament. However, she maintained that blasting the establishment and its crop of politicians would be out of character for her.
“The criticism has definitely reached my ears. I come from the school of people that have sacrificed their youth to make sure that we enjoy the fruits of the independence that we have today. We can express ourselves freely in Namibia,” said Angula.
“Our elders have gone and fought and sacrificed their youth. Some of them went when they were very young but sacrificed it all for us to enjoy the fruits of this independence, including myself, who is running for the presidency.
“But we cannot deny that we have economic challenges. Therefore, we need people that are economically literate to take us into the next phase of our struggle. Our next phase is not a political but economic war,” she added, further stressing that the generation that has fought for Namibia’s independence cannot be the same generation that takes the country to economic freedom.
“The political struggle has already been won, but it does not mean that we need to break down that generation. For us to win and address the economic challenges that we have, we do not need to break down the generation that got us here. We are just saying that their type of leadership is not appropriate for the type of challenges that we are facing at this time,” Angula said.
She maintained that her campaign’s standpoint is to build for the next stage.
