AR targets central bank reforms

Job Amupanda

Affirmative Repositioning (AR) leader Job Amupanda says his party is going to target the Bank of Namibia to better the economy.

Amupanda was responding to questions during Friday’s presidential debate.

He says his party aims to reform the Bank of Namibia and to delink the Namibia dollar from the rand.

“Now, remember, at independence, this thing of the South African rand that is pegged, it was only supposed to be six months to a year. Now, it’s 34 years later,” he said.

The party believes delinking the Namibian dollar from the rand will achieve fiscal sovereignty.

“So, we will amend the Bank of Namibia Act to be able to be decisive so that our country can get what it wants,” he added.

The AR leader said the pegged dollar is holding back young Namibians and business people.

“They kept the dollar linked to the rand.

Why, when young people want to benefit, business people want to benefit, how do you do that? So, we will change that Bank of Namibia [Act],” Amupanda said.
