Aranos killer receives prison terms of 41 years for rape and murder

A Hardap region resident convicted of raping and murdering his girlfriend four years ago has been sentenced to an effective period of 41 years’ imprisonment.

Judge Dinnah Usiku sentenced Jeremias Nowaseb (41) in the High Court at Windhoek Correctional Facility on Wednesday.

She sentenced Nowaseb to 26 years’ imprisonment on a charge of murder, and to a jail term of 15 years on a count of rape.

The sentences were not ordered to be served concurrently.

Nowaseb was found guilty on the charges at the end of September.

The judge found that he assaulted, raped and murdered his girlfriend, Christina Kooper (22), at Aranos on 31 October 2020.

Kooper was killed when a rock weighing about 14.5 kilograms was thrown onto her head.

A medical doctor who carried out a post-mortem examination on Kooper’s body recorded multiple injuries to her head, including a skull fracture.

He told the court he believed she was struck with the stone at least five times.
The court also heard that Kooper was raped and killed after Nowaseb heard she had had intercourse with another man.

Nowaseb was employed as a part-time farmworker before the incident.
