Athletes to suffer

Athletes to suffer

NAMIBIA National Olympic Committee (NNOC) president Agnes Tjongarero says athletes competing in events organised either by Athletics Namibia (AN) under Alpha Kangueehi or the Interim Committee (IC), will not be considered for the 2010 Commonwealth Games’ qualifications in New Delhi, India.

Tjongarero said the NNOC has received a letter from the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) that says the AN and IC are not recognised.
‘Therefore, until one of the two parties is recognised, the NNOC will abide by its decision,’ she said.
Tjongarero said following the letter, the NNOC will only acknowledge athletes competing at IAAF-recognised events.
‘This is unfortunate, because the athletes are the ones suffering in this ordeal,’ she noted.
Tjongarero added the IAAF’s representatives who were scheduled to arrive in Namibia this month, will only be here next month.
The ongoing saga in athletics, which started early last year, stems from the Namibia Sport Commission’s (NSC) refusal to acknowledge the outcome of the February 28 AN elective congress.
