Athletics Namibia case in High Court

Athletics Namibia case in High Court

FORMER Athletics Namibia (AN) president Alpha Kangueehi will today argue in the High Court why he believes a three-member AN Interim Committee set up earlier this month is illegal.

Confirming the court date yesterday, Kangueehi said that he opened the case because the Namibia Sports Commission (NSC) has no right to appoint an interim committee, saying it should be a decision of AN members.
The NSC announced a fortnight ago that a three-member committee comprising Donovan Zealand, Agnes Samaria and Abner Xoagub would run the affairs of athletics in the country, after elections for the AN presidency reached a stalemate last year.
Kangueehi and Namibian sprinting legend Frank Fredericks both drew four votes each in their contest for the position of president during elections held last October in Katima Mulilo.
Since then, both the NSC chief administrator, Rusten Mogane, and the deputy Minister of Youth, National Service, Sport and Culture, Pohamba Shifeta, publicly pronounced themselves on the matter, saying Kangueehi is no longer AN president.
Kangueehi urged the deputy minister to uphold the country’s constitution and that of AN, saying it is his (Shifeta’s) duty to uphold the constitution and not to take sides.
Contacted for comment, Mogane said: ‘I do not know what Kangueehi wants, he is stuck in the dark, and as far as I am concerned Kangueehi is not AN’s president’.
He stated that the interim committee was established by the regional athletics representatives, and not by the NSC. – Nampa
