Auas Primary School, based at Damara Location in Windhoek, plans to raise funds to build a hall as a part of its 50th anniversary.
“We want to unite our former pupils, parents, community, teachers and principal,” Johannes Gawaxab, one of the 50th anniversary organising committee members, emphasised.
The school currently has
1 275 pupils and 50 staff members including institutional workers.
Auas PS was established with 12 classrooms and teachers on 18 February 1969 and was formerly known as Damara Nommer 1.
The establishment of the school was due to the relocation of Old Location when the Bantu education system was in place. Ruben Seibeb was the first principal while the current principal is Linea Beauty Joel.
An opening ceremony will be held on Friday, 27 September at the school premises, with a scripture reading and prayer.
On Saturday, 28 September, a fun entrepreneurship day will take place at the school with activities such as jumping castles, face painting, and soccer and netball matches which will feature current teachers against former pupils.
A gala dinner, aimed at generating money through pledges from former pupils will be held on Friday, 4 October at Eros Primary Hall.
A ma /gaisa dance night will take place on Saturday, 5 October at the Katutura Community Hall starting at 20h00. On the same date, a cultural day will take place at the school where various cultures will exhibit food. Mr and Miss Auas Primary and a talent show are other activities scheduled as well.
Gawaxab called on all former pupils and parents of current pupils to assist the school in building a hall by “pledging and attending various events planned for the week-long anniversary celebrations”.
Auas PS has won numerous awards over the years such as first place during the Khomas Regional Festival when the !Gorabahe Nama Cultural Group scooped the first prize while the Sida #Nisasib Damara Cultural group won first place in the Khomas Regional Festival in 2014.
Last year, the school won Kwata Cricket administrator of the year while this year, the school’s soccer team won first place in the under-13 soccer league in the region.
