BA break Cup drought with Super Cup

Black Africa broke their Cup drought when they won the Standard Bank Super Cup after beating African Stars 3-2 on Saturday.

With the victory, BA not only won the winner’s prize of N$500 000 but also claimed their first major Cup in 10 years, since their last triumph in 2004 when they won the NFA Cup.

Playing in front of 6 000 festive fans at the Sam Nujoma Stadium, Bradley Wermann gave Stars an early lead, but BA took the lead after two goals within five minutes by Ananias Gebhardt towards the end of the first half.

Substitute striker Roger Katjiteo put BA 3-1 ahead in the second half, before Meraai Swartbooi scored a great free kick two minutes from time to make the final score 3-2.

Black Africa coach Brian Isaacs praised his players on an excellent performance.

“It was an excellent performance and we have shown now that we are a good team and we can win cups as well. The people said that Stars are a cup team but today we demonstrated that we are capable of winning any trophy,” he said.

BA had missed several leading players for the match but Isaacs said there was enough quality and depth in the squad.

“We have depth in the team and you could see the quality today. They came out attacking and competed all the way to make us victorious. It was a team effort and we had the game planned and it worked very well,” he said.

“This is a turning point for us because we showed that we are the team to beat this season. So it’s a warning to the other teams that they should not take us lightly,” he added.

African Stars’ coach Woody Jacobs said they made too many errors.

“We made too many errors. We scored the first goal and were in control, but after that we lost focus and conceded two silly goals in my view. But credit to Black Africa, they kept on pushing and they were the more determined team at the end of the day. So congratulations to them and it’s back to the drawing board for us,” he said.
