Be Happy With ‘Tuhafeni’

It’s been two years since Kalux won best newcomer with his debut album ‘Superstar’. After ‘Ayekoo’, he recently dropped his third album ‘Tuhafeni’ and tells the story of his life and transformation through music.

The Otjiwarongo-based artist said he named this project ‘Tuhafeni’ because it simply means: “Let’s be happy”.

“My life inspired this album. Who I was then and who I am now,” Kalux said. “The message on this album is to inspire people to believe in themselves. If you take me for example, I was a nobody, but because I believed in myself, I have turned my life from a farm boy to a superstar,” Kalux said.

The musician wants his music to make people happy and from the first track onwards, this goal is clear. ‘It’s Okay’, the first track, is a feel good song and this vibe carries through all the way to track six, ‘Marry You’.

He delivers a hip urban mixture of flavourful sounds to produce a smooth track on ‘Crazy’. Cazzy features on this track and provides soulful vocals.

‘Onde Ku Ndjulukuwa’ is a song through which Kalux expresses himself deeply with more mellow and passionate vocals. The acoustic instruments, worked in with the drums and percussions blend well with the bass in the background.

On track seven, ‘Kundurupa’, Kalux picks up the pace again with a song which will surely get on the dance floor. The hook and beat of the song will have you moving your hips, whether you are sitting at your desk in the office, standing in line at the bank or saka-ing at the club on a Friday night.

If you like the likes of Davido’s ‘Fall’ and ‘If’, you will definitely love ‘Waripi’. With a saxophone to accompany the African-flavoured drums and kicks, Kalux delivers a blend of sounds producing a true feel-good song. The quirky ad-libs express Kalux’s personality well too.

The multilingual artist displays his diversity with ‘Ra-#Au’ as he entertains with a high tempo Damara-punch track in Khoekhoegowab. He brings the same flavour, with more of a hip-hop feel on ‘!Ai a Xun Ge’ featuring Tswazis.

Kalux dedicates ‘My Mense’ to his people all across the country. This Afrikaans track has a general appeal with its beat and simple lyrics, making a good dance track – and who doesn’t like their town getting a shout out?

The album was produced by the likes of Stwo, Da Prodigy, Kallo On The Beat and Superstar Records. Kalux was looking to produce a feel-good and inspirational album with ‘Tuhafeni’. He succeeded as this is a highly entertaining project, which displays the creativity and diversity of the musician, however still maintaining its cohesiveness.

Kalux however said he doesn’t know if this album will reach the same level of success as his previous work. “Because this is me on this album. That’s why I called it my house name, Tuhafeni.”
