The #BeFree Youth Campus will soon be building a community campus at Kilimanjaro informal settlement to serve the Tobias Hainyeko constituency.
This was announced by One Economy Foundation project manager Saddam Biwa on Saturday.
He was speaking at the #BeFree Building Communities outreach event at Okuryangava extension 6, at Kilimanjaro in Windhoek.
“This is not the last time #BeFree will be at Kilimanjaro,” Biwa said.
He said the success of the upcoming #BeFree Community Campus at Kilimanjaro is dependent on smart partnerships and collaboration.
The upcoming campus involves collaboration between the One Economy Foundation and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Namibia, he said.
It would serve as an extension of the services available at the #BeFree Youth Campus at the Katutura Multi-Purpose Youth Centre, which was launched last September.
“The various services envisioned at the satellite campus are primary healthcare services, skills development programmes, sanitary pad manufacturing facilities, horticultural services, and an early childhood development centre,” Biwa said.
Tobias Hainyeko constituency councillor Christopher Likuwa said he sees the new centre as a transformative space that would offer essential integrated services to empower residents of all ages.
“We gather here at the edge of Kilimanjaro to celebrate a very special moment – the celebration of communities and the provision of integrated services,” he said.
Various services and activities were available for young people on Saturday, such as healthcare consultations, skills development demonstrations, soccer tournaments, and fun activities for children.
Likuwa encouraged community members to make use of the the services available, embrace opportunities, participate actively, and work together to create a better future.
Eight local teams participated in the football competitions, battling it out to become #BeFree champions.
The winners received medals and cash prizes.
Boston Madrid emerged as the winners, walking away with N$5 000.
United took second place, receiving N$2 000, and Merengue Wolves took third place with a cash prize of N$1 000.
Reverend Joel Fikeipo of the Evangelical Lutheran Church said the event celebrated the strength and resilience of families in the Kilimanjaro community and the promising future envisioned for the community through the upcoming #BeFree Community Campus.
“We understand the challenges faced in the informal settlements, where hardships weigh heavily on families. Yet, amid these difficulties, we also see immense resilience and hope,” he said.
Fikeipo called upon government agencies, religious institutions, and the community to build a brighter future through collective action.
Over 1 500 members of the Kilimanjaro community attended the outreach programme.
Former first lady Monica Geingos also attended the event.
