The Oshana regional police are urging banks, security companies and the community to be vigilant of crime ahead of the festive season.
Oshana police regional commander commissioner Lungameni Sakaria says bank customers should be aware of scams.
He said this during a closed-door meeting with the banking sector and security companies at Oshakati yesterday.
He said this type of fraud is mostly perpetrated internally, along with international syndicates using sophisticated methods.
“It is that time of the year, and we all need to be vigilant. This meeting is aimed at discussing ways to make sure the movement of money in the region is secure and safe, and that there is proper and improved communication between the banks, the police and security companies,” Sakaria said.
He said the police want to address how banks can help ensure clients withdrawing large amounts of cash are protected – either through police escorts or enabling them to transfer large amounts electronically.
“There should be communication with the police for assistance and escorting to or from the bank. We also want to make sure the community understands there are other means of transmitting money from one point to another without having to carry cash from the bank,” Sakaria said.
He urged the banking sector to arrange ways to issue large amounts of cash to clients without risking their lives.
Sakaria advised banks and security companies to be on the alert at all times, especially when transporting big amounts of money to avoid cash heists.
