‘Big Brother Mzansi: Secrets’ does not seem to be enjoying quite the appeal that Big Brother Africa does. It’s almost like watching ‘Generations’ without the subtitles.
That’s right, BBM has absolutely no language barriers, so housemates are more or less free to talk in whatever language they wish. For viewers who are not South African, this is a major push factor, besides the fact that no matter who wins, the R1 million prize will not cross SA borders.
Some dedicated patriots don’t see the point of watching it at all because their country won’t benefit and it would be a waste of time to vote. Others, namely the addicts, are simply finding ways to entertain themselves before the real Big Brother steps into the building. For now, BBM: Secrets is all we’ve got and it certainly hasn’t shied away from changing the rules of the game.
From a new host to a new theme song, BBM is a revamped spin-off of the original show and it has already sparked new romances, released a couple of party animals and brought out some serious claws. After all, not everybody can click with the cool crowd. So bring on the drama!
Recently, Big Brother or Biggie, as he is affectionately known, made the girls reveal a few intimate details about themselves and the guys had to guess who those secrets belonged to otherwise they’d be nominated. Growing up on the streets, sex position bucket lists… BBM has it all and indeed, it promises dirty laundry, serious competition and the occasional celebrity appearance.
Five of the 18 housemates have been evicted within the past two weeks and if you have no idea who they are, it’s not entirely your fault. BBM hasn’t created the same hype as Big Brother Africa has and besides the channel itself, not much advertising has been going around. When asked, most people weren’t aware the show had begun or simply weren’t interested, which isn’t too surprising.
If you can’t stay away from the Big Brother franchise and don’t mind the South Africanised version, new methods to vote have been introduced including Mxit, WeChat and USSD.
Unrestricted access is all yours on channels 197 and 198 on DStv, although the live shows take place on Mzansi Magic, channel 116. So check it out if you like and watch the secrets slowly unfold one day at a time.
