Big plans for Unam Home League

CITY Rangers edged Pamodzi 1-0 in the Unam Home League pre-season football cup held at the Windhoek main campus over last weekend.

The bronze medal went to People FC who defeated Bima FC 3-1 in the third place play-off.

Sixteen teams took part in the two-day precursor to the league, which kicks off in September when classes resume.

The University of Namibia (Unam) Home League was established in the late 90s to recruit players for Unam Football Club, which only fielded students from the institution at the time.

Over time, the home league expanded to include students from the Polytechnic of Namibia (now the Namibia University of Science and Technology), Windhoek College of Education (now Unam Khomasdal Campus) and Neudamm.

Presently, the Unam Football Association-sanctioned league is home to any tertiary-level student, including those from Namcol.

The Unam Home League has produced notable players such as ex-Brave Warriors skipper Ronald Ketjijere, Willem Mwedihanga, Brian Bantam, Romario Ndjavera, Mervin Katire, Hashiti Lucas, Amy Augusto Savihemba, Joseph Kuugongelwa, Kleopas Nuukushu, Charles Wimmerth, Njengomovandu Tjiposa and Ndemwaadha Shivute.

Women’s football competitions, refereeing and coaching courses are part of this year’s programme, said Unam Football Association president Luciano Isaaks.

“Our aim and vision is to not only provide a competitive league, but we also strive to be one of the best leagues in the country,” he said. “We want to put varsity football where it belongs. We are inspired by our neighbours South Africa and Western countries where tertiary sport is big.

“This year, we are striving for greatness. We have had positive talks with a few corporate businesses and the Namibia Football Association to come on board and partner with us to give the students a quality and fun league,” Isaaks said.
