Black mamba scare at Omusati school

A snake, suspected to be a black mamba, has allegedly taken up residence in a tree at Oiva Shivute Combined School near Okahao in the Omusati region.

The school’s acting principal, Hileni Nandago, says the snake was spotted on the school premises last week.

Security guards reported the matter to her.

Nandago on Friday said the snake has caused alarm at the school.

“I reported it to the inspector of education at the Okahao circuit, but he referred me to nature conservation officials,” she says.

Nature conservation officials have not attended to the incident yet.

Nandago says the school has about 326 pupils, who are expected to return on Monday.

“We are very afraid, and everyone is uncomfortable,” she says.

Okahao circuit inspector Eliakim Kamati has confirmed that he was informed by the acting principal about the snake sighting at the school during the holiday.

“I advised her to consult the relevant officials, the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism.

“As you know, they started yesterday (Thursday). I have been waiting to hear from her in terms of their action, but she informed me that she was able to get hold of the relevant officials today,” Kamati says.
