A no-holds-barred trip awaits when Daniel Radcliffe drops all wands for weapons in ‘Guns Akimbo’.
Radcliffe plays the role of Miles Harris, a young man at a tech start-up, who feels his life lacks direction and substance.
During the movie’s early scenes a rogue hacker and criminal – Riktor – plans and hosts online death matches which receive massive online viewerships.
The arenas are anywhere, at anytime – all for the viewers. And the current world heavyweight champion is Nix, a homicidal blonde who will not hesitate to ensure her survival to the next round of the contest.
Miles does the unthinkable on a Friday night and draws the attention of Riktor, the owner of the Skizm platform. Miles trolls the Skizm chat room where viewers get to watch the death matches. He gets noticed and then all hell breaks loose, literally!
Miles is kidnapped. He’s tortured. And, guns are bolted and screwed onto his hands. Sounds bad enough but soon he is entered into the fight arena against Nix.
The movie takes a bit of a dip in that Miles does everything he can to run away from Nix and the impending fight. He even enlists his ex-girlfriend Nova to meet with him for some help. But, she misunderstands this scenario and kicks him out of the car.
Well, he is only dressed in a gown, tiger slippers, his pyjama shirt and underwear. Yes, tighty-whiteys.
Looking at the timeline, you would think the movie takes place over two days as Miles only has that amount of time to combat and win against Nix.
Through all this, Riktor enjoys the unfolding comedy of woeful survival. The viewers and following are becoming more annoyed with Miles, as he is later given the name Akimbo.
A weird plot is also included inside the story, as Miles uncovers that Nix is the daughter of a policeman that has a history with Riktor. The detective is not aware that his long-lost daughter is a gun-toting madwoman.
Being just 95 minutes in length, the movie ensures nonsensical violence and laughter, almost reminiscent of ‘Scott Pilgrim vs the World’ and ‘American Ultra’. Sure to be a cult classic.
This is the second movie that Radcliffe stars in in a matter of a few months, as ‘Escape from Pretoria’ was released earlier this month.
The rest of the cast are Samara Weaving as Nix, Ned Dennehy as Riktor, Natasha Liu Bordizzo as Nova and Grant Bowler as the insane Degraves.
‘Guns Akimbo’ is the second directorial work of New Zealander Jason Lei Howden, whose other work was ‘Deathgasm’. The titles are telling and leave no doubt as to what Howden aims for in his action movies.
‘Guns Akimbo’ is available on your favourite streaming platform.
