Body of hippo attack victim recovered

THE body of a 25-year-old man who had been attacked and killed by a hippopotamus at the Kapako village along the Okavango River on Tuesday, was recovered yesterday.

The Kapako village is situated some 20km west of Rundu in the Kavango East region.

The deceased, identified as Mukoso Mangundu, was found floating in the Okavango River near the Mupini Health Centre, some 10km from the scene where he was attacked and killed.

His remains were found by members of the police’s water wing, together with officials from the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, who had been searching the area since Tuesday morning after the incident happened.

The remains were then transported to the Rundu State Hospital mortuary.

Meanwhile, the 20-year-old Alex Siremo, who was in the canoe with the deceased during the attack, escaped unhurt.

The two men were apparently fishing when a female hippo attacked them, and the canoe capsized. Siremo attempted to rescue Mangundu, but did not succeed.

The female hippo, which attacked the two men, was shot and killed by officials from the Ministry of Environment and Tourism (MET) on the same day.

The meat of the hippo was then donated to the family of the deceased to be consumed during the funeral.
