Boxer Meroro wipes out SA’s Gaka

NAMIBIAN super-middleweight pugilist Vikapita Meroro was in devastating form when he beat South African boxer Vusi Gaka in Johannesburg at the weekend.

Meroro won by unanimous decision from the judges and will now have to turn his attention to the next fight, which is scheduled for May 27 in Swakopmund. Meroro (20), who turned professional recently, fought outside the borders of the country for the first time in his career and now has three wins from his three pro fights. His next opponent for the Swakopmund fight is not known yet, but his trainer Nestor Tobias says the man to take him on will come from outside Namibia.Tobias said Meroro fought aggressively and his fitness level carried him through perfectly.”It was a very good fight.I am really happy about his performance. He is a good fighter and his future looks extremely bright,” Tobias said after returning from South Africa yesterday.Tobias said the fight served as the main bout for the event, which was billed as the ‘Future Champions’ and held at a mall in the Johannesburg city centre.”The crowd was great. There were a lot of people and the event was a success overall,” said Tobias, who was a boxer in his younger days, but now doubles as promoter and trainer.Tobias said he wants his professional fighters like Meroro to get more fights to give them more exposure.”It is important for these young boxers to get as many fights as possible. It gives them the needed experience and they make a living out of their careers,” he said.Meroro won a silver medal at the Zone Six Games held in South Africa last year, while he also reached the quarter-finals at the All Africa Games in Morocco the same year.He also made it to the quarter-finals of the Olympic Games qualifiers in 2004, and was the national champion in the middleweight category as an amateur for three consecutive years. He was champion from 2003 until last year when he turned professional.Meroro (20), who turned professional recently, fought outside the borders of the country for the first time in his career and now has three wins from his three pro fights. He was champion from 2003 until last year when he turned professional.
