Boy (13) takes own life after being scolded for watching porn

A thirteen-year-old boy at Otjomuise in Windhoek took his own life last week after his parents scolded him for allegedly watching pornography.

Man Katutundu’s aunt informed his parents that he had watched pornographic material, according to the police’s report.

His next of kin have been informed of his death, while police investigations continue.

Social worker Veronica Theron urges parents to be more open with their children about sex.

“If your child has accidentally stumbled upon explicit content, ask him or her how they found it … to identify whether there is a need to improve security measures,” she says.

Additionally, she says it is important “to reassure your child that they are not in trouble, as they too could be traumatised about finding pornography which they could have been searching for due to curiosity”.

Theron says once the child is calm, a conversation about pornography could be brought up.

“Discussions about love and intimacy are important. If possible, try to solve the problem together,” she says.
