Boy who drowned in Okavango River buried

One of the two boys who drowned in the Okavango River early this month was buried on Friday.

Valentinus Mangundu (7) drowned at Mayara village in the Kavango East region on 3 August. He and Gotfred Kushonya (4) were accompanying their sister, Cecilia Mangundu, to wash clothes.

Village headman Moyo Nyambi this week told The Namibian the boys’ parents were working in their garden a few metres from the river at the time of the incident.

He said when their sister returned from hanging up clothes, the boys were nowhere to be seen.

“Their clothes were found at the shore where they were playing. This is the first time this kind of incident has happened at Mayara,” Nyambi said.

Gotfred’s body has not yet been recovered. The police search for his body was called off last weekend after a seven-day search.
