Brazilian Navy vessel ‘Defensora’ to visit Namibia

A Brazilian Navy vessel frigate ‘Defensora’ will arrive at Walvis Bay on Tuesday for the 30th anniversary of Brazil-Namibia naval cooperation.

The visit aims to highlight the partnership between the two countries, affirm Brazil’s commitment to strengthening maritime relations with partners in Africa, and support collaborative efforts to promote the Zone of Peace and Cooperation of the South Atlantic.

Apart from conducting joint naval exercises with the Namibian Navy’s flagship NS ‘Elephant’, the vessel will also host activities for the public.

Tuesday’s ceremonial salute to land by firing 21 salvo cannon shots before docking at the port, will be answered by a cannon from Namibia’s largest naval base, Capt (N) P.N. Sacharia, at Walvis Bay.

The public can visit the vessel from 13h00 to 17h00 on Thursday, followed by a mass to symbolise the enthronement of the statue of Our Lady of Aparecida at the Stella Maris Catholic Church at Walvis Bay at 18h00.

An image of the Patroness of Brazil will be donated to the parish to celebrate 30 years of the Brazilian Catholic community at Walvis Bay.

Another ceremony will be held at 9h00 on Friday to inaugurate the commemorative memorial of the completion of a hydrographic survey of the Port of Walvis Bay.

The survey, which was carried out by the Brazilian hydrographic vessel ‘Sirius’ in 1997, was restored for the 30th anniversary of the Brazil-Namibia Naval Cooperation Agreement.

The vessel, which also visited Simon’s Town in South Africa to participate in a naval exercise involving the navies of Brazil, South Africa and India, departed from Rio de Janeiro on 23 September.
