Cabinet approves proposed levies for plastic bag usage

CABINET has approved the proposed introduction of levies for the usage of plastic carrier bags.

The deputy minister of information and communication technology, Engel Nawatiseb, announced this during a media briefing on Thursday on Cabinet resolutions taken on Wednesday.

Nawatiseb said 100% of the revenue from this levy will go towards the Environmental Investment Fund (EIF) for re-investment in improved waste management practices.

The EIF was created in 2012 with the aim of supporting individuals, projects and communities to ensure the sustainable use of natural resources by regulating their use, to prevent wastage, inefficiency and degradation.

The resolutions further approved the banning of the use of plastic carrier bags in protected areas and the import and domestic production of plastic bags containing Carbon Acid Calcium Salt.

Cabinet also authorised the Ministry of Environment and Tourism to table the 2017/18 Report on the Implementation of the Environmental Management Act, 2007 (Act No. 7 of 2007) in the National Assembly.

Offices, ministries and agencies will furthermore undertake listed activities in the Environmental Management Act to obtain an Environmental Clearance Certificate before undertaking activities related to the removal of resources including natural living resources..
